We continue the quest to update how we deliver our quarterly update to you. This time around we are tying our blog platform. Let us know what you think!
For me one of the most satisfying parts of architecture is when a building is finally complete. I love being able to walk into a new space that was once just an idea captured with lines on paper that has now manifest as a physical space of metal, brick, and glass. It changes from the abstract to a reality that people can inhabit, move through, and enjoy. The process is sometimes arduous, but to create in this fashion can be exhilarating.
If you have followed our ministry over the last few years, you may recall that in the fall of 2021, I earned my license to practice architecture in Texas. The first project I signed was Longview Christian Church (LCC). The challenge presented to TECH was to renovate their existing building from the 1960's, flood damaged building into a space that meets their current needs.
Part of that challenge was to transform the space in a way that brought the whole congregation forward, together. Like many congregations, the building was beloved as it was, not necessarily because it served the needs of the body well but because of the proximity it had to meaningful moments in their lives. To change it can feel akin to someone dramatically altering your childhood home.
The bulk of the work in unity was, as it should be, done by LCC. Through prayer and moxy, they moved forward with Jesus in unity. TECH's challenge was to weave the bits of inspiration and vision LCC provided into a cohesive, buildable design that could bring together their desire for an open, modern space that had natural lighting while also honoring the history of the space. The resulting collaboration between LCC, TECH, and the contractor achieved just that.
As I have interacted with various members of the congregation, they have expressed how the design has exceeded their expectations. They have related how some, upon entering the space for the first time were brought to tears, others were speechless. I have been told that the building is used frequently throughout the week and of their vision for how it can be used in the future to minister to LCC and to the greater Longview community.
While all the human players could point toward the hard work and effort as the source of what made the process as successful as it was, that would be disingenuous. Throughout the process I see the fingerprints of Jesus. He took the idea of unity captured in our minds and manifest a bond within the church body. He used a physical space of metal, brick, and glass to draw together a congregation. It is rare that I get to see the process of building as a ministry tool, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of this process. Thank you for your prayers as we have moved through this adventure!
How to Pray
- We are planning our next big trip. This year we are headed to the Midwest. Pray for us to see God's hand in both the planning and the meetings that take place.
- Our vans, Jayne and Shep, are 18 and 19 years old. The engine and transmission seem to be going strong, but the body is starting to wear out. In the wild used car market we find ourselves in please pray for wisdom and resources as we consider options to replace at least one of the vans in the near future.
- Praise for the end of the school year! It was a good year, though some parts were tough for the kids and for us, but we made it! Now we're look forward to summer!
Closer to Home
It is hard to believe but summer is here. Liam has completed 6th grade, Hannah, finished 3rd, and Ranen rocked kindergarten. The year had its challenges but they all learned more knowledge, grew in wisdom, and out grew their uniforms. Liam espeically as he enters the teen years continues his rapid increase in height. We look forward to the summer break and the opportunity to relax some with friends and family.
There is always more we could share. If you would like to hear more stories of life in the mission and at home please check out our other blog posts.
