At the end of every summer, Eric and I look at what chores we have the kids do. We have talked with them for a long time about being part of our family team and everyone has to help out with what they can to keep us going. Sometimes chores stay pretty close to the same, sometimes they shift, and sometimes they change a lot! This year is somewhere between shifting and changing a lot!
I always love when the kids get new chores charts. Aside from the novelty, it is a chance to clarify some of the bad habits we have gotten into the last year. It is a way to speak to how the kids have grown and new things they can do.
This time of year is also a good reminder to me of how far we have come. All the kids started off with cleaning their own room. Being responsible for their own space as their first chore. All of them are now doing chores that require they clean after each other. I know the next few years will bring us all the conversations, tears, and frustrations that come along with the teenage years, and I hope that starting with this practical, physical example helps model that we support one another emotionally and spiritually along the way too.
